It can be hard to motivate yourself when you don’t have a boss telling you what to do and making demands on your time. There is no-one saying to you that your blog post has to be done by 2 pm or you’re fired or make sure you are at your desk before 9 am or we won’t be needing your services.
Instead, when you are your own boss you get to set your own hours and work to a schedule that suits you. One that can work for you and often against you.
But if you are suffering from procrastination and need some help to motivate yourself to get stuff done then here are some handy tips to make sure you stay on track.
5 Tips To Get Started When You Suffer From Procrastination
#1. Set Goals
The word goals always makes me think of interviews when they would ask you ” Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” and you felt obliged to come up with some amazing career ambitions you had!
But actually, goals are really just things you want that you work towards getting.
For example, if you want to have a turnover of 50,000 dollars in your business then that’s your goal.
If you don’t know what you are working towards then often you can find yourself drifting along and then before you know it you are 10 years into the business and haven’t made great progress.
#2. Find Your Why?
- Why are you in business?
- What do you love about being in your business?
- Why do you get up every day to do what you do?
WHAT IS YOUR WHY?
As soon as you can sit down and decide why you are doing this and what you want out of it, the sooner you will be able to commit to getting on with it.
To stop procrastinating you need to know what your why is.
#3. Have A Plan
If you were hosting a birthday party for your best friend or you were getting married then you would have a plan. You wouldn’t just tell everyone to turn up without thinking about food, venue, party bags, seating plans, what you were wearing etc.
So why don’t you have a plan for your business?
Why haven’t you thought about what content you are going to create, what social media posts you are going to make, what emails you are going to send, what offers and promotions you are going to run…and WHEN!
If you have a plan you can start to see what the task ahead looks like.
What it involves and how you can execute it.
#4. Make Yourself Accountable
If you were working for someone else you would make sure that you did things on time and to the best of your ability – because otherwise you wouldn’t get paid.
So why don’t you hold yourself as accountable when you are working for yourself.
Why don’t you say I’m going to do this…and then do it?
Holding yourself accountable means you are going to meet those goals you set for yourself with ease.
#5. Have Some Fun
The joy of running your own business is that you can run it how you like. So you can do the things that you enjoy and make sure you have fun doing them.
If you like writing then you should be blogging.
If you don’t like writing then why not start a podcast?
Maybe if you are creative then Instagram is for you.
What Do You Do To Stay Motivated?
If you have a lot of things to do and still are struggling with procrastination then why not set yourself small goals and reward yourself once you achieve them.
It could be a night at the cinema, a bar of chocolate, a meal out, a day off! Whatever will help you to get going with the things you need to do for your business.
